That's a sixpence

By todays standard it's worth about five cents, which is what it became when NZ changed to decimal currency in 1967.

But it's value was much more, here are some of the things you could do with sixpence when I was a kid:

1. buy two icecreams
2. get a milkshake and tuppence change
3. buy a comic, Walt Disney or The Phantom
4. catch a bus to town and back again
5. sit downstairs at the movies
6. buy lunch at school - fish 'n' chips
7. get your puncture repaired on your bike
8. buy the morning newspaper, and the evening one
9. buy 24 wine gums
10. or six liquorice straps
11. buy three boxes of matches
12. have three turns at the fairground
13. get a quart of milk
14. a loaf of bread
15. get six 1d bangers
16. six strings of Tom Thumbs
17. two sky rockets at Guy Fawkes.
18. an exercise book for school.
19. post two letters
20. but you needed two to get a hair cut

Can't do any of those things for five cents today...

Wow!! Very cool looking money! You're right about a nickel not buying a thing. Same here. Just about everything on your list cost a couple of bucks apiece. And many a LOT more than $2 -- more like $6 or $7. Thanks for the thought provoking list! And the photos of some very cool coins! :)

@SF, thanks for the visit and the comment. Prices sure are a lot different today.

I post coins and stuff on:

I think there are also some on Tomus Arcanum.

I like old coins (I like new ones too, but the boss doesn't give me enough of them).
